Is there a
minimal economical farming size?

It is quite
common in Brazil when you meet farmers, to hear the question: “what is the
minimal economically farm size to produce peanuts?” In fact, “peanuts” was
yesterdays question, but just change crop and you will have a recurring question.
I see as a
tough subject, but what amazes me the most is how fast people can handle this
query. Like a fire gun: 30 acres for peanuts, 55 acres for sugarcane, 60 acres
for corn, x acres for y, and so on… But
where all those numbers came from? Is there a downtrend or farming in Brazil
will be viable only for bigger and bigger farmers? What about small holders,
will they be out of business in Brazil?
Of course I
don’t know the answer for all these question, I would not even know how to
handle the one in the title. But I do
believe, that we need to review our farming concepts and start introducing new
elements into this discussion, instead of keeping ourselves locked into size.
Maybe I am
locket in a dream, and size really matters.
